,000. the same rate we had when bill clinton was president and our economy created nearly 23 million new jobs. >> that's from a new video by the obama administration designed to get the public on the president's side of this tax fight. the president took to twitter today to answer questions about the fiscal cliff. one person asked whether deductions for homeowners are at risk to which the president responded, breaks for middle class important for families and economy. if top rates don't go up, danger that middle class deductions get hit. signed "bo." yesterday house speaker john boehner said this on fox news. >> listen, nobody want to go over the cliff. that's why the day after the election i tried to speed this process up by making a concession to put revenues on the table. it's unfortunate that the white house has spent three weeks doing basically nothing. you know, the president's idea of a negotiation is, roll over and do what i ask. >> and on "meet the press" yesterday grover tried to change america's mind about who to blame if we do go off the cliff. >> tea party 2 is going to dwarf tea

it to passage, the bill would be send to the white house and then put into law. obama has been unequivocal over the fact that the top earners tax rate must return to the clinton era. he can introduce a tax plan that will accomplish all of his revenue goals. that's the rumbling that they are getting ready to cave and make it seem like they are not caving. the republicans are suddenly in control, blah, blah, blah blah blah. so i don't -- i'm getting confused on how the best way is for this to play out. . that fight is about over. it's sort of odd to hear mitt romney complaining that president obama got an advantage because he was for same-sex marriage. not very long ago that was a wedge issue bob dole was using against bill clinton. i think we've made progress in some other areas. clearly be done and we have the deniers of global warming, but we're reducing the amount of oil that we import. there is progress in that regard. on the other hand, there's been, i think, retrogression in the recognition of two of the great accomplishments of america in the 20th century, with social security and medicare. before those two, we did not have the possibility for the average older person who wasn't wealthy to have a decent existence in retirement. we now have that. i'm sorry to see that pulled back. there's also an international event, for the first time, and i think we have to recognize this. from 1940 to 1990 we had very heavily armed, very bad people threatening our very existence as a society. even though we may have exaggerated that a little bit at the end. we don't have that anymore. we

whether someone liked president reagan or president george h.w. bush or president bill clinton, or president george w. bush or president barack obama, the truth is, at the time they were elected president, we as a nation, overall, got the president we deserved at that time. now, one of the most impressive speeches i've ever heard was given by senator barack obama at the democratic convention, and i love the way he talked about america coming back as one america. not a red america or blue america but america. just one country. and it's one of the things that i drew great hope from on 9/12 delsh 2001 as people of the country -- on 9/12/2001 as people of the country gathered around, as we did in our east texas town, and we all held hands and we sang hymns and patriotic songs and you look -- i look around the circle and was deeply moved because i knew that day there were no hyphenated americans. there were just americans. and we were together. and everybody standing there in that square holding hands, we shared the love for our country. we wanted to see it strong. we wanted to see

it all messy and make it difficult. i'm not going to defend barack obama's outreach to the minority party, but i could go back to knot the use of the filibuster but other methods of obstruction with bill clinton who reached out all the time. so i think that's the factor but a minor one. i think harry reid's use of filling the amendment tree, partly this is chicken and egg, but has been done too much and that didn't result in at least some protests and willingness of some senators on his side who might otherwise have joined in some of these filibusters to do so. it had much more to do with a concerted party strategy can which i think is the first time we have seen it. >> i think there's two separate issues. one, obstruction on nominations, and to come obstruction on -- [inaudible] it is true you see these judges and it will go 99 points. but i think it's important to remember what we are talking about. the alternative to that is to move it by unanimous consent. it's not like the house where there is about. and if a member of checks to unanimous consent because they do not want to vote, don
